What Can Laughter Do To You

Laughing.
what do you feel after you laugh, some kind of funny feeling in ur stomach right? when you laugh you feel some how much better, some how tiny happiness has already made.
For me, when I hear someone tells an unfunny joke that doesn't makes me laugh even a bit but when they laugh by their own jokes, i automatically start laughing too not to the joke, but maybe to the person that laugh, or i don't know, i just laugh anyway

Many researchers find some good benefits in laughing (Warning: After this you will expect some theories that will make you kinda dizzy like me when reading it)

"While more studies need to be done, studies so far have shown that laughter can help relieve pain, bring greater happiness, and even increase immunity. Positive psychology names the propensity for laughter and sense of humor as one of the 24 main signature strengths one can possess, and laughter yoga clubs are springing up across the country.- stress.about.com"

wow

They even make some laughter yoga clubs to relieve people,

Buuttt... not only this, laughing can actually saves ppl's life (what? yeah i know what ur thinking, i think like that too [?] )

"While there is clinical evidence of the beneficial effects of laughter on the body, the extent to which laughter can actually battle, or cure diseases remains controversial. Many believe that laughter is merely a distraction from pain, while others believe that laughter can work wonders beyond that. There have been many experiments run which have shown the phenomena of laughter, and there are a few miracle stories of laughter saving lives- serendip.brynmawr.edu"

Maybe u are thinking, "uh.. how exactly just by laughing can save lifes? can it save cancer?" (well that's a whole different story) but it really do in some kind of situations, such as this one.

The most famous story of laughter as medicine is that of Norman Cousins. Norman Cousins had been the editor of the Saturday Review for over thirty years, and has written numerous books including Anatomy of an Illness.

In 1964, Norman Cousins returned home from a meeting in Moscow experiencing severe joint pain and with fever. He was diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis, a collagen illness that attacks the connective tissues of the body, most likely due to exposure to heavy-metal poisoning.

Cousins questioned this diagnosis because his wife had been with him, but experienced none of the symptoms. He began to research the effects of stress on the body, and learned that it could be detrimental to the immune system. Cousins read of the theory that negative emotions be harmful to the body, and so hypothesized that if the negative emotions were detrimental to your health, then the positive emotions should improve health.

Cousins, still battling his ailment, was being treated with high doses of painkillers, which he realized were being harmful to his body. This realization motivated him to prescribe himself a medication of a different sort. He hired a nurse who would read him humorous stories, and play for him Marx Brothers movies. This proved to be effective, as in very little time, Cousins was off of all painkillers and sleeping pills.

He found that the laughter relieved pain and would help him sleep. Cousins published his story and his claims of the benefits of laughter, but was received with much criticism. In 1989, it was finally acknowledged in the Journal of the American Medical Association that laughter therapy could help to improve the quality of life for patients with chronic illnesses, and that laughter has an immediate symptom-relieving effect. The increase in threshold for pain during laughter that Cousins experienced has been confirmed in laboratory studies. Since Norman Cousins declared that he "laughed himself out of" a deadly disease, scientists have theorized that laughter has the ability to strengthen the human immune system.

but unfortunately, some depressed ppl hard to laugh, maybe because of the deep sadness or something, but I'll give you some tips on how to laugh :)

  • Gather with your friends

Having friends over or hang with them at some place, perhaps watching movie together, karaoke, etc is a great set up for laughter or other good feelings, because when you gather together without you notice you and ur friends will often talk and joke on one another, so this is a really good opportunity for laughing.
    • Watch a comedy TV show or a comedy movie

While wasting your time watching something just funny may actually frustrate you, but watching truly hilarious movies and shows is an easy way to get laughter into your life whenever you need it.
      • Find some humor in your life

"Instead of complaining about life's frustrations, try to laugh about them. If something is so frustrating or depressing it's ridiculous, realize that you could 'look back on it and laugh.-stress.about.com"
        • Take some time to have fun

If you're depressed it's better for you to entertain yourself, for me i play video games, or bugging my sister and brother hehee, but that's more better rather than just sit there and daydreaming lost in thoughts about ur depressing stuff, somehow it's just better to go out and breathe some fresh air (or distracting ur brother or sister, that's fun).
          • 'Fake It Until You Make It'

Just as studies show the positive effects of smiling occur whether the smile is fake or real, faked laughter also provides the benefits mentioned above. The body can't distinguish between 'fake' laughter that you just start doing on purpose, and 'real' laughter that comes from true humor--the physical benefits are exactly the same, and the former usually leads to the latter anyway. So smile more, and fake laughter; you'll still achieve positive effects, and the fake merriment may lead to real smiles and laughter.- stress.about.com

            See?
Laughing really is a good thing, but please don't over laugh urself. or ppl will think that u are...
            joking~

            anyway, thanks for reading :D
